Ariccia is situated between Lake Albano and Lake Nemi. The most important Roman ruins are a great viaduct around two hundred meters long, which was the most important work of engi neering to be built along the Appian Way in antiquity. The original medieval village was largely reorganised by Gian Lo- renzo Bernini in the 17th century. He completed “Palazzo Chigi”, designed its courtyard and stables, planned the complex of the church of l’Assunta, and rearranged the roads within the town. In the imposing “Palazzo Chigi” was filmed Luchino Visconti’s cinematographic masterpiece “Il Gattopardo”. It houses a refined and elegant museum and an interesting picture gallery.
