On the slopes of a volcanic crater, originally known as “Castrum Gentianum”, it was a military camp set up by the Romans to guard Lake Nemi and the nearby sanctuary of Diana. We can see a central avenue of Viale delle Olmate and the baroque “tridente” consisting of three roads lead converging on a central square. The Palazzo Cesarini Sforza is one of the most important histo- rical buildings in the town, with its evocative “Romantic Park”. In the 17th century Genzano was known as the “City of Wine”. Today Genzano is famous all over the world for the spectacular flower festival of the “Infiorata” in June and for its excellent bread, the first to be awarded the PGI denomination.
